Hattie Clay was born on November 17, 1895, in Berea, Kentucky.[1] She attended Fisk University in Nashville, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education.[2], Clarksville, Tennessee. In 1956, she enrolled at Austin Peay State University, where she obtained a Master's in Education the following year. Following her graduation from Fisk, she went on to teach in Lincoln Ridge, KY. After obtaining her Master's, she stayed in Clarksville and taught at Burt High School for 38 years until her death in 1961.
Preceding her husband Rev. Wilhoite's death in 1958, Clay died of colon cancer on October 15, 1961, at the age of 65. Hattie is succeeded by her three sisters: Mrs. Mable Irene Hollins, Mrs. Neomi Rash, and Mrs. Bessie Rothel. Along with her brother, Russell Walker. [3]
