History
Himalayan Reinsurance was established to increase the domestic retention of reinsurance premiums within Nepal. Prior to its establishment, Nepal Reinsurance Company Limited (Nepal Re) was the sole domestic reinsurer in the country.[7]
The company received its operating license from the insurance regulatory authority Nepal Insurance Authority in June 2021 and formally commenced operations in July 2021.[6] [8]
In December 2023, the company issued an Initial Public Offering (IPO) to the general public at a premium price. Following the allotment, it became the second reinsurance company to be listed on the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE). Trading of its shares began in January 2024 under the symbol HRL.[9]
Ownership
Capital Structure As of late 2025, the company has a paid-up capital of approximately NPR 10.86 billion.[10] The shareholding structure is divided between promoter shares (70%) and public shares (30%).[11]
Promoters The company is promoted by a consortium of major Nepali business groups and financial institutions, including the Golchha Group, Shanker Group, Infinity Holdings, and state-owned banks such as Nepal Bank Limited and Rastriya Banijya Bank.[12]
Services
Himalayan Re provides both treaty and facultative reinsurance solutions for both life and general (non-life) insurance.
International Expansion:The company received approval from the insurance regulatory authority (Nepal Insurance Authority) in January 2024 to operate as a cross-border reinsurer in India.
[13][14]
[15]
It also conducts business in other global markets, including Asian and African continents.[16]
Regulatory Action and Business Suspension
In May 2026, the Nepal Insurance Authority temporarily suspended Himalayan Reinsurance Limited from undertaking new reinsurance business under Section 136 of the Insurance Act, citing ongoing regulatory investigations and compliance concerns.[17]
