Phùng Huy Hùng (born 1946 in Hải Phòng – died 2007), known by the stage names Huy Hùng or Hùng Nghê, was a Vietnamese male singer and songwriter specializing in traditional and revolutionary music. He is best known for the song “Hải Phòng tuổi thơ tôi” (from the film Sóng ở đáy sông, 1998). He worked at Voice of Vietnam and received multiple awards from the Vietnam Musicians’ Association. He was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist.[1][2]
Biography
NSƯT Huy Hùng (real name Phùng Huy Hùng) was born and raised in Hải Phòng in 1946. After finishing high school, he was unable to pursue further education due to financial difficulties and instead worked at the Hải Phòng Railway Carriage Factory. This environment became a turning point in his life, as the factory had a strong artistic movement with an excellent male choir. Having shown a passion and talent for singing from a young age, he flourished in this artistic setting. Musician Trần Chung, who managed the “Khắp nơi ca hát” program at Voice of Vietnam, discovered him during a local performance in Hải Phòng and invited him to join the station. In 1969, he became a singer for CP90 (Liberation Radio). After 1975, he officially worked at Voice of Vietnam, becoming one of its leading male soloists. Later, he was appointed Head of the Vocal Team and then Deputy Head of the music ensemble.[3]
