Hydroelectric power in Africa is one of the continent's most important sources of renewable energy, supplying around one-fifth of Africa's electricity generation and accounting for a significant share of installed renewable energy capacity.[1][2]
Africa possesses an estimated 12% of the world's technically feasible hydropower potential, but only a small proportion has been developed.[3] The continent's extensive river systems, including the Congo River, Nile, Niger River, Zambezi River and Volta River, provide considerable opportunities for electricity generation, irrigation and water management.
Hydropower plays an important role in improving electricity access across Africa. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), hundreds of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa still lack access to electricity, making the expansion of reliable and affordable power generation a major development priority.[4]

Africa has an estimated technically feasible hydropower potential exceeding 1,700 TWh annually, yet less than 15% has been exploited.[5] The greatest untapped potential lies in the Congo Basin, particularly the Inga Falls on the Congo River, which is considered one of the world's largest potential hydropower sites.

Economic importance
Hydroelectric power contributes to economic growth by providing relatively low-cost electricity for households, industries and businesses. It also supports regional electricity trade through interconnected power pools such as the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) and the West African Power Pool (WAPP).
Many African governments have prioritised hydropower development as part of their national energy strategies to increase electricity access while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Environmental and social impacts
Although hydropower produces low greenhouse gas emissions during operation, the construction of large dams can have significant environmental and social consequences. These include:
- Displacement of local communities
- Loss of biodiversity
- Alteration of river ecosystems
- Reduced downstream water flow
- Changes to fisheries and agriculture
Climate change also poses challenges for hydropower generation, as prolonged droughts and changing rainfall patterns can reduce water availability and electricity production.
Future development
Several large hydropower projects are under construction or proposed across Africa, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the proposed Grand Inga Dam project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. International organisations such as the African Development Bank, the World Bank, and the International Hydropower Association support sustainable hydropower development through financing, research and technical assistance.
Expanding hydropower alongside other renewable energy sources such as solar and wind is considered essential for improving energy security and achieving universal electricity access across Africa.
