Ilex Press is a British publisher of illustrated books specialising in photography, visual arts, design, and popular culture. It is an imprint of the Octopus Publishing Group, itself a division of Hachette Book Group.

History

Ilex Press was founded in January 2000 by publishing veteran Alastair Campbell as a collaborative venture alongside Ivy Press, with both companies sharing offices in Lewes, East Sussex, England.[1]

Campbell, who had co-founded Quarto in 1977, established Ilex to publish illustrated reference books for creative professionals, including photographers, illustrators, and designers.

Founded 7 December 1999, incorporated as Ilex Press Limited Co-founded by Alastair Campbell alongside Peter Bridgewater and Jenny Manstead Originally based in Lewes, East Sussex Dissolved as independent entity 10 May 2016 after full integration into Octopus

In December 2014, Ilex Press was acquired by Octopus Publishing Group, a division of Hachette Book Group.[2] [3] [4] [5]

Publishing focus

Ilex Press specialises in books on photography, art, design, and digital creativity. It has published titles distributed internationally, including in North America through publishers such as Chronicle Books, Abrams, and HarperCollins. Notable titles include the Complete Guide to Digital Photography by Michael Freeman, which has sold over 400,000 copies worldwide,[6] and What They Didn't Teach You in Photo School by Demetrius Fordham.
