Early Life and Education
Sonquist was born in Elmhurst, Illinois in 1931, to parents J. Albert and Clare Sonquist. He started playing piano at age 4.[2][4] After the death of his father, his uncle Dave Sonquist helped his mother raise him.[2] During the summer he turned 16, John went to the Circle Pines Center, a recreation focused co-op, which his uncle directed in Michigan. It was during this time that he would meet his eventual wife, Hanne Deutsch.[2][5]
After marrying Deutsch in 1950, he got his undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago in 1951.[2][4][5] He was a conscientious objector, and completed his alternative service at Manteno State Hospital as a recreation coordinator from July 1953 to May 1955.[2] In 1969, he got his PhD in Computer Applications in Social Science from the University of Chicago.[2][4]
Career
Sonquist worked as the Director of Computer Services for the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan starting in 1959.[2][3][5] He had three children with his wife, named Eric, Catherine, and Kristin.[1][2][5] In 1970, he became an Associate Professor for the Sociology department at the University of California, Santa Barbara.[5] It was during this time that he created a series of courses that combined computer use and social sciences, called Sonquist Tech.[2][3][6] He would stay on as a professor for 21 years before retiring in 1991.[2][3][6]
Retirement
After retiring, Sonquist served on the boards of the Santa Barbara Music Club as treasurer, the local ACLU chapter, and the Piano Club of Santa Barbara.[2][3][6] He also played piano for and directed the Live Oak Unitarian Congregation.[2][6]
His wife died on May 31, 2009 from lymphoma.[5] His death followed on September 20, 2017, at the age of 86.[1][3][4][6]
