John Cyril Mitchell (March 14, 1967 – June 14, 2024) was an American political staffer who served as Chief of Staff to Jesse L. Jackson Sr. at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. He was known for his long-standing role in coordinating civil rights advocacy and organizational efforts.[1][2]


Early life and education

Mitchell was born in Lanham, Maryland. He attended DeMatha Catholic High School and later studied at Prince George's Community College.[1]

Career

Mitchell began his career with the Citizenship Education Fund, where he served as an executive assistant and became involved in civil rights initiatives.[1]

He later worked closely with Jesse L. Jackson Sr. and relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where the Rainbow PUSH Coalition is headquartered. Over time, he held several roles, including scheduler and senior aide, before being appointed Chief of Staff in 2004.[1]

Mitchell served for decades as a key organizational figure within the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, helping coordinate advocacy efforts related to voting rights and economic equity.[1][2]

Recognition

Mitchell was recognized by the Illinois General Assembly for his contributions to civil rights and public service.[3]

Mitchell was married and had two children.

Death

Mitchell died on June 14, 2024, at the age of 57 after battling blood cancer.[1]
