John Salzinger (born November 6, 1969) is an American entrepreneur and inventor. He is the founder of the portable solar brand HAVEN and the co-founder of MPOWERD, the company that developed the Luci line of inflatable solar lanterns.[1] In 2021, Worth magazine named Salzinger to its inaugural "Worthy 100" list, which recognizes business leaders for social and environmental impact. He was featured in the "Environmental Betterment" category alongside outdoor industry figures including Yvon Chouinard and Davis Smith.[2][3] He is listed as an inventor on more than 25 patents related to portable solar and consumer lighting.[4]

Career

Early media work

Salzinger began his career in photography and global print production. He later worked as a news editor for ABC World Television News and as a multimedia producer for the Associated Press, where he produced broadcast and digital content.[5]

MPOWERD and Luci (2012–2024)

In 2012, Salzinger co-founded MPOWERD (Micro Power Design).[1] The company’s primary product, the Luci solar inflatable lantern, was developed for the outdoor recreation and humanitarian markets. Under Salzinger’s leadership, MPOWERD became a certified B Corporation, achieving an impact score of 140.5.[3]

The company established partnerships with nonprofit organizations to distribute solar lighting in regions lacking electricity or affected by natural disasters.[3] In June 2024, MPOWERD and the Luci brand were acquired by BioLite.[5][6]

HAVEN

Following the acquisition of MPOWERD, Salzinger founded HAVEN, a brand focused on solar-powered lanterns and power banks for emergency preparedness and outdoor use.[5]
