Julie L. Nethercot is a United States Marine Corps major general, currently serving as Chief of Staff, USSOUTHCOM.

She is a former commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, which she commanded between 2020 and 2022.

A communications officer, she has commanded at every level from platoon to battalion. She has also served as commander of the Marine Corps Officer Candidates School, Quantico.

Her personal decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit with gold star and a Bronze Star.


Military career[1]

Nethercot earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Natural Science from Midland University before commissioning into the Marine Corps in May of 1993.

She subsequently served as Platoon Leader in Marine Wing Communications Squadron 28 as well as Company Executive Officer and Company Commander. She worked as Tactics Instructor at The Basic School before serving in multiple staff roles and taking command of Mike Company. From 2001 onwards, she served as Company Commander and eventually Operations Officer in 8th Communications Battalion.

From 2004 to 2007, Major Nethercot served as Commanding Officer of Recruting Station Frederick of the 1st Marine Corps District. Afterwards, she served as Regional Plans Officer, Fifth Fleet and later Chief of Plans (G-5) of I Marine Expeditionary Force. From May 2009 to June 2011, she served as Commander, 9th Communications Battalion. During that time, she helped create the first full-time Marine Corps Female Engagement Team.[2]

Starting in 2011, Nethercot attended the Naval War College, earning a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.

She later served as executive officer of the Ground Combat Element integrated task force at Camp Lejeune before assuming command of Officer Candidates School, Quantico on July 8th, 2015.[3]

Nethercot was nominated for promotion to the rank of brigadier general by President Trump on May 6, 2020[4] and served as commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and Eastern Recruiting Region from June 2020 to June 2022.

She then served as Director, J-5 (Strategy, Policy and Plans), USSOUTHCOM before being promoted to major general in 2024.[5] In August 2024, she started in her current assignment as Chief of Staff, SOUTHCOM.


Julie Nethercot deployed in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom (Djibouti) as well as a year-long deployment to Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

In 2010, Nethercot was awarded the Major Megan McClung Award for Visionary Leadership.
