Jung Chang-sun (Korean: 정창선; 1943 – 2 February 2026) was a South Korean businessman and the founder of Jungheung Group. He developed a regional construction firm into one of South Korea's top 20 business groups by total assets as of 2022.[1]

Career

Jung began working in the construction industry as an apprentice at age 19. [2] In 1983, he established Geumnam Housing Construction, which was later incorporated as Jungheung Construction. From 1992, he served as the group's chairman.

Business Acquisitions

Jung oversaw the expansion of Jungheung Group through several major acquisitions: Media: In 2019, the group acquired Herald Media Group, the publisher of The Korea Herald and Herald Business. [2] Construction: In December 2021, Jung finalized the acquisition of a majority stake in Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) for 2.1 trillion KRW.[3]

Management Philosophy

Jung maintained a conservative financial policy known as the "Three No's":

  • No acquisition of assets unrelated to core business sectors.
  • No debt guarantees for affiliate companies.
  • No participation in projects without guaranteed profitability.[4]

Public Roles and Education

Jung served two terms as the chairman of the Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry (2018–2024). [5] He held a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Chonnam National University.

Death

Jung died on 2 February 2026, at the age of 84, in Gwangju. [3]
