Karan Boolani (born 5 October 1985) is an Indian film director and producer known for his work in Hindi cinema and streaming series. He made his feature directorial debut with the comedy Thank You for Coming (2023), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and explored themes of female pleasure and self-love.[1][2] Boolani previously directed episodes of the Netflix series Selection Day (2018–2019), adapted from Aravind Adiga's novel, and the Indian adaptation of 24 (2013).[3]

Early life and education

Boolani was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, to a Sindhi family.[4] His father, Vijay Boolani, is a businessman, and his mother is Binu Boolani; he has a younger sister, Karishma Boolani, a sports scientist.[5] Initially studying business, he left due to financial constraints and began working at age 17 as a production assistant in advertising, producing over 500 commercials for brands like Google, Mastercard, and Nike across 38 countries by age 24.[6][7]

He earned a full scholarship for a Master's degree in Film and Television at Bond University, Australia.[6] His short film La Fourchette screened at international festivals and won Best Film at the New York Short Film Festival.[7] His documentary That Healing Feeling premiered at Sheffield DocFest and Hot Docs.[8]

Career

Boolani began as an assistant director on films like Aisha (2010) and Wake Up Sid (2009), both produced by his future wife, Rhea Kapoor.[9] In 2013, he directed episodes of the Indian adaptation of 24, starring Anil Kapoor.[3]

In 2018, Boolani directed and executive-produced six episodes of Netflix's Selection Day, an early Indian original based on Adiga's novel about cricket prodigies.[10][11][12] His feature debut, Thank You for Coming (2023), a comedy written by Radhika Anand and Prashasti Singh, stars Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, Kusha Kapila, and Shibani Bedi. Produced by Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor, it premiered at TIFF and was released on 6 October 2023, grossing ₹5.25 crore in its opening weekend.[13][1][2] Boolani emphasized universal storytelling, avoiding gender-specific labels for the film.[14][7]

Personal life

Boolani met Rhea Kapoor on the set of Aisha in 2009 and began dating; they married on 14 August 2021 in a private Mumbai ceremony.[5][15][16] They celebrated their fourth anniversary in August 2025, with Anil Kapoor sharing a tribute on social media. They reside in Mumbai with their two dogs.[17]
