When the state Labor Party came to power in 2017, it had committed to build Karnup station as part of it's Metronet project. However, the federal Coalition government wanted Lakelands station to be built, and committed to funding 80% of the A$80 million required. The federal government refused requests for the funding to be transferred to the Karnup station project, and thus the Karnup project was put on hold so that the state could provide its share of funding for Lakelands. That resulted in accusations that the federal government was pork barrelling, because Lakelands station was in Liberal MP Andrew Hastie's seat, whereas Karnup station was in a safe Labor seat, held by Madeleine King. Hastie has in recent months been critical of the Cook Labor government for failing to build Karnup station despite this however.[3][4][5]
In 2023 the state government offered developers a contract for land around Karnup Station for the creation of a transit oriented development if they committed to funding the construction of the station. However as of 2026, no such contract has been awarded and the station remains unbuilt.[6]
The City of Rockingham's Planning and Development Services bulletin from March 2026 states that the Karnup District Structure Plan, of which Karnup station is a part, is in it's final stages and that "work is underway by the City’s consultant to finalise the draft District Structure Plan for the Council’s consideration in the second quarter of 2026". The District Structure Plan has an expected completion date of September 2026. As such, it is expected that no significant developments involving Karnup Station will occur until the plan is finalised and published, at which point enactment can begin.[7]
