Kenneth Hempel: A hero for heritage conservation after the 1966 Flood of the Arno From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kenneth Hempel was a British conservator and curator known for his work in the preservation of paintings and cultural heritage in Florence. He became closely associated with restoration efforts following the 1966 flood of the Arno, which caused widespread damage to artworks, manuscripts, and historic collections across the city.

Hempel pack

One of his most notable technical contributions was the development of the so-called “Hempel pack”, a cleaning poultice composed of sepiolite and Shellsol A. Originally devised in London through experimental simulation of flood conditions on Carrara marble, the method was applied in Florence to extract deeply penetrated oily stains from marble sculptures.[1][2]
