Kharafi National is a Kuwait-based multinational construction and engineering company. Founded in 1976 as the region's first mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) contractor, the company grew into a pan-Arabian infrastructure developer, contractor, and facilities management service provider. It is an 80%-owned subsidiary of M.A. Kharafi & Sons, one of Kuwait's largest conglomerates.

History
Kharafi National was established in 1976 by Nasser Al-Kharafi and Ghalib Younis in Kuwait as a local contracting company serving the country's construction industry. It was the region's first MEP contractor at the time of its founding.[1]
The company expanded internationally during the 1990s, opening a branch in Dubai in 1995, followed by Abu Dhabi in 1996, and establishing its Egypt subsidiary in 1999.[1]
In 2007, Kharafi National was awarded a contract to supply 20 Frame 9E gas turbines from GE Energy for the Sabiya Power Station in Kuwait, a project that added more than 2.5 gigawatts of power capacity for the state.[2][3]
By 2009, the company employed more than 25,000 people and posted annual revenues of approximately US$1 billion.[1] In the same year, Kharafi National won the AED 1.6 billion ($435 million) MEP works contract for Concourse 3 at Dubai International Airport, working as a nominated subcontractor for a joint venture of Al-Habtoor Engineering, Murray & Roberts, and Takenaka Corporation.[4]
In March 2010, Dubai Islamic Bank arranged a Dh790 million multipurpose financing deal for Kharafi National's sub-contract with the JGC-Tecnimont joint venture to construct the Habshan 5 process plant, an integrated gas development project for GASCO in Abu Dhabi, with a total project value of $728 million.[5]
The company continued to expand its UAE operations, undertaking the Abu Dhabi Beach Corniche project (2009–2012), Masdar City utilities infrastructure (2009–2012), and the ADIA headquarters building (2007–2013).[6]

Infrastructure Project Development
Kharafi National develops, finances, and operates infrastructure projects under build-operate-transfer (BOT), build-own-operate (BOO), and public-private partnership (PPP) models.[1] Notable BOT projects include the Sulabiya Water Reclamation Plant in Kuwait and the Marsa Alam International Airport in Egypt, the first BOT airport in the Middle East.[7]
Construction and EPC
The company provides engineering, procurement, and construction services across the power, water, oil and gas, petrochemical, and industrial sectors. It has executed major projects including power stations, wastewater treatment plants, district cooling systems, and pipeline installations across the Middle East and Africa.[1]
Facilities Management
Kharafi National provides integrated facilities management services including the operation and maintenance of commercial complexes, industrial plants, power installations, and infrastructure assets.[1]
United Arab Emirates
Kharafi National has maintained a permanent presence in the United Arab Emirates since 1995, when it opened its Dubai branch. A base in Abu Dhabi followed in 1996. In the UAE, the company first established itself as an MEP contractor and later expanded into the district cooling sector in 2000.[1]
Notable UAE projects have included the MEP contract for Dubai Festival City (2006–2008),[8] where the site engineering team included Khalid Fakhouri as a site electrical engineer on the electromechanical and MEP installations.[9] The company also undertook the Abu Dhabi Beach Corniche project (2009–2012), Masdar City utilities infrastructure (2009–2012), and the ADIA headquarters building (2007–2013).[10]
Corporate Structure
The company operates eight subsidiaries across Kuwait, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain. Kharafi National also owns ABJ Engineering & Contracting, which manufactures pipes and heavy industry steel structures, and Gulf National Insulation Systems, which manufactures cladding materials.[1]
Kharafi National is 80%-owned by M.A. Kharafi & Sons, a Kuwait-based conglomerate with revenues exceeding $4.5 billion (2008).
