In 2023, LA3C rebranded as a food and music festival, removing its film element from the inaugural festival. The 2023 lineup featured mostly artists from urban and jazz genres such as headliners Erykah Badu, and Herbie Hancock. This was a drastic shift from its international and EDM focused music lineup of 2022.[4]
History
Founded by Penske Media Corporation initially in 2021, the festival was slated to take place on December 2–4, 2021. However, due to the ongoing uncertainty of the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2021, the event was quickly cancelled and announced for a future date.[5][6]
LA3C was set to leverage the expertise and access of all its Penske Media properties including IndieWire, Variety, Rolling Stone, Deadline, Billboard, VIBE, The Hollywood Reporter, WWD, Sportico, SHE Media, ArtNews, Robb Report, and LDJ.[7] In 2022, Penske Media Corporation, re-announced their plans to host LA3C in December 2022 via their media properties.[8][9]
Inaugural Festival
On October 6, 2022, just three months before the festival date, Penske Media and Hot Import Nights announced the final dates for the festival. The inaugural festival was slated for two days from December 10–11, 2022 at the LA Historic Park. It would feature two stages its mainstage and the Hot Import Nights stage. It's initial headliners were Megan Thee Stallion, Maluma, Snoop Dogg, and Kpop idols SEVENTEEN.[10]
However, on November 30, 2022, Megan Thee Stallion announced she "cannot perform due to unforeseen circumstances" and was subsequently replaced by rapper Lil Baby.[11] On December 10, 2022, Lil Baby was 25 minutes late to his scheduled 1 hour set, upsetting some fans.[12]
Other notable performers included Free Nationals, Fonesca, and EDM producer Shawn Wasbi.[13]
The inaugural festival had two stages, the mainstage which was curated by Penske Media, and the Hot Import Nights stage which was curated by automotive events company Hot Import Nights. The Hot Import Nights stage's programming was primarily EDM and highlighted mainly up and coming female artists alongside heavy hitters in the EDM and Hip Hop genres.[14]
Hot Import Nights Stage Programming in 2022
The Hot Import Nights' (HIN) stage lineup included headliners such as record producer DJ Mustard, Arius, Bling Empire's Kim Lee and Korean-American house music star TOKiMONSTA.[15]
Additionally up-and-coming EDM acts such as AJ Hernz, Freya Fox, Cam Girl, Meirlin, DJ Peach, and Las Vegas club Lauren "DJ LOLO" Welch.[16]
Location and format changes
The inaugural LA3C was hosted in 2022 at the Los Angeles Historic Park near Downtown Los Angeles, CA. The park has held several large open air music festivals prior, including Zedd In The Park. The location was chosen for its large outdoor accommodation for fans of SEVENTEEN, Snoop Dogg, and Lil Baby.[17]
In 2023, it was announced that LA3C would be moved to Los Angeles' historic core across several venues in DTLA with artists performing at and playing intimate shows at the Orpheum Theatre and Theatre at the Ace Hotel, and the Palace Theatre. This format aligned more similarly to Penske Media's sister festival Life is Beautiful in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As of 2024, a third LA3C was not announced, however Penske Media still maintains the LA3C website and social media assets.[18][19]
