Lana Cease (born 1969) is an American watercolor artist known for hyperrealistic still lifes, neon sign paintings, and underwater figure works.[1] Her work has been exhibited in national juried exhibitions and featured in publications including Southwest Art, Fine Art Connoisseur, and The Art of Watercolour.[2]

Early life and education

Cease was born in Southwest Iowa and is based in Southwest Florida.[3] She is largely self-taught and studied art at the college level.

Career

Cease works primarily in watercolor, producing realist paintings that depict reflective surfaces such as glass, metal, and neon signage. Her work also includes underwater figurative compositions.

Her paintings have been exhibited in juried exhibitions including those of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Watercolor USA, and the Kentucky Watercolor Society.[4]

She has served on the board of the National Watercolor Society as education director.[5]

She holds signature status in several watercolor societies, including the American Watercolor Society (AWS), National Watercolor Society (NWS), and Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA).

Her work has appeared in Southwest Art, American Watercolor Weekly, Fine Art Connoisseur, and the French edition of The Art of Watercolour.[6]

She has also been included in the Splash series published by Artists Network, including Splash 24: Artists, Images, and Insights.[7]

Cease has been interviewed regarding watercolor societies and contemporary practice.[8]

Cease was selected for an artist residency program in New Mexico.[9]

American Neon: What Light Remains

In 2025, Cease began American Neon: What Light Remains, a project documenting vintage neon signs and roadside landmarks across the United States.[10] The project combines watercolor painting and photography.

Exhibitions and awards

Cease has received awards from the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Richeson 75 International Exhibition, Watercolor USA, and Women in Watercolor.[11][12]

Her work has been exhibited at venues including the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art.[13]

Cease has also exhibited internationally, including in the National Watercolor Society international exchange exhibition.[14]

In 2018, she was featured in a four-person exhibition in Merriam, Kansas.[15]

Teaching and professional activities

Cease conducts workshops and demonstrations in watercolor and has served as a juror and mentor.[16]

North American Watercolor

In 2025, Cease founded North American Watercolor (NAW), a membership-based watercolor organization. She serves as its president.

The organization organizes juried exhibitions and publishes a digital and print magazine, North American Watercolor Magazine, featuring contemporary watercolor artists. Cease is the founder and editor-in-chief of the publication.

Collections and licensing

Cease’s work is held in private collections, including those of Missouri Congressman Sam Graves and former Missouri Governor Mike Parson and First Lady Teresa Parson.[17]
