Chess Career
In 2023, at the age of 12, Rice won the women's title at the Australian Chess Championship in Scarborough, Perth. Her performance was significantly higher than her official rating, earning her a tournament performance rating of 2,104 and leading to a substantial rise in her FIDE rating from 1,403.[3]
Rice has also been listed as part of Singapore’s chess contingent for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, reflecting her standing among the country’s competitive youth players.[4]
Personal Background
Leah Rice has two sisters who also play chess — an older sister, Lauren Rice (born 2007), and a younger sister, Lana Rice (born 2013).[5] She attends Nanyang Girls’ High School. Leah has credited her interest in chess to Lauren, who first learned the game at Nanyang Primary School and later introduced both Leah and Lana to chess. [6] The Rice sisters have collectively won multiple Singapore national age-group and national school chess championships over the years. [7]
