Early life

Flanery was born in Los Angeles, California[1] but at the age of 3, she moved to Toronto. She first started her modelling career for brands such as Gap and Target.[2] Her father is also an actor and her mother owns a bakery in Toronto.[3]

Career

2015-2016: Career beginnings

In 2015 Flanery made her first professional audition for a lead role in the thriller film called Lavender (2016 film)[4] where she was cast as Alice. Although her first film project was Lavender, it did not premiere until Tribeca film festival in April 2016. Consequently, her first appearance to be released was the 2015 television movie Last Chance for Christmas (also known as "The Christmas Star"). In the film she played Madison, the daughter of a reindeer farm owner played by Hilarie Burton.[5][6][7]

Following her debut, Flanery appeared in the Canadian comedy film Sadie's Last Days on Earth as the younger version of the title character.[8]

2017: Recurring roles and film work

In 2017 Flanery obtained several recurring roles. She first appeared as Cambie, the younger daughter of the lead character, in the drama series Mary Kills People. She then portrayed Lila DeWitt in the horror series The Mist (TV series).[9][10]

During the same year, Flanery appeared in the romantic comedy film Home Again (2017 Movie) as Isabel, the eldest daughter of the character played by Reese Witherspoon. She also obtained roles in the independent thriller Touched playing the character of Caitlyn and in the television horror film Neverknock as Jenna, portraying one of a group of teenagers facing a supernatural entity.[11][12][13]

2017-2020: Television breakthroughs

Later in 2017, Flanery joined the cast of the Freeform (TV channel) supernatural drama series Shadowhunters during its second season. She was cast as the Seelie Queen,[14] where she had to play an English accent. Flanery noted the casting was a "surprise" because she originally "thought it might be a vampire role."[15] She explained that during her audition, "they had me do both my normal accent and an English one, or my best version of."[14] She continued as a recurring cast member through the show's third season (2019), appearing in several episodes alongside Dominic Sherwood and Alberto Rosende.[16]

On August 17, 2017, it was announced that Flanery had been cast as the character of Madi Griffin, the adopted orphan daughter of the series' protagonist Clarke Griffin played by Eliza Taylor, in the post-apocalyptic science fiction drama series The 100 on The CW.[17] She then obtained a recurring role through season 7, appearing in over 30 episodes until the series finale in 2020.[18] During this period she was nominated for "Favorite Female Breakout Star" at the 2018 E! TV Scoop Awards for her work on The 100.[19]

She also appeared in the 2018 Hallmark Channel TV movie Season for Love as Rosie Dawson.[20]

2021–present: Recent work

Flanery appeared as a panelist on the series World's Funniest Animals on The CW.[21] In 2024 she obtained a lead role in the Tubi Original thriller film Deadly Invitations, where she portrayed the character of Nicole.[22][23] She also secured the supporting role of Teen Lucy in the comedy-drama film Everything to Me, which premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival in late 2024.[24] In early 2025, she guest-starred as Ava Lancaster in the season two premiere of Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent.[25]

Personal life

Apart from English, Flanery also speaks French and Mandarin.[26][27]

Flanery was raised in a philanthropic environment. Her mother, Sacha Grierson, runs Eat My Words, a Toronto-based bakery that donates its proceeds to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.[28]
