Lun Htin is a Burmese paramilitary force that has been active in Rakhine State, Myanmar. The group has been implicated in several violent incidents against Rohingya civilians, particularly during periods of sectarian conflict and refugee movements.

History and documented incidents

The Lun Htin have been involved in violent operations primarily in the border regions of Rakhine State near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

1992 Naf River massacre

In February 1992, the Lun Htin killed 20 Rohingya refugees who were attempting to cross the Naf River into Bangladesh to escape violence and persecution in Myanmar.[1]

2012 sectarian violence

During the intense sectarian conflict in Rakhine State in June 2012, Lun Htin members were reported to be involved in arson attacks against Muslim communities. Local residents reported that Muslim houses were deliberately set on fire "in front of the police" by members of the paramilitary group.[2]

Context and background

The Lun Htin operates in the context of the long-standing Rohingya conflict and broader Internal conflict in Myanmar. The group's activities are part of a pattern of violence against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State that has persisted for decades.

The Naf River, where the 1992 massacre occurred, serves as a natural border between Bangladesh and Myanmar and has been the site of numerous incidents of violence against refugees and fishermen by various Burmese military and paramilitary forces over several decades.
