Margaret McDonald (born 1997 or 1998) is a Scottish author. She won the Carnegie Medal for Writing for her debut novel, Glasgow Boys, becoming the youngest-ever recipient of the award.

Early life

McDonald was born in Glasgow, and grew up in East Kilbride.[2] She started writing at age 13, publishing fan fiction on Archive of Our Own.[3] McDonald studied English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Strathclyde, and got her Master's in English literature at the University of Glasgow.[3] She previously worked as a vaccine assistant, and for the NHS.[3]

Career

McDonald finished writing her debut novel, Glasgow Boys, in 2022. The book was rejected by 60 literary agents before McDonald secured representation.[4] Glasgow Boys was published on 2 May 2024 by Faber & Faber, to critical acclaim.[5][6] The novel won multiple awards, including the UKLA Book Awards[7], the Branford Boase Award[8] and the Carnegie Medal for Writing. McDonald became the youngest-ever winner of the award, at 27.[9] Glasgow Boys was also nominated for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize[10] and shortlisted for the YA Book Prize.[11]

Personal life

McDonald has Crohn's disease.[3]
