Mashiro Sakamoto (Japanese: 坂本 舞白, romanized: Sakamoto Mashiro; born December 16, 1999), better known mononymously as Mashiro, is a Japanese singer-songwriter based in South Korea. She is the leader of the South Korean girl group Madein. She is also a former member of the girl group Kep1er, which was formed through the Mnet survival show Girls Planet 999.

Early life

Mashiro was born on December 16, 1999 in Tokyo. She dreamed of becoming an idol after watching Dream High which her mother recommended when she was 12 years old.[1]

Career

Pre-debut

Mashiro won second place in the JYP Entertainment 12th Open Audition,[2] and trained under the company from 2016 to 2018.[3] She made her first public appearance in 2017 on the Mnet reality survival show Stray Kids, as part of a female trainee team that included future Itzy members Yeji, Chaeryeong, Ryujin, and Yuna. After leaving JYP, she returned to Japan and worked part-time, having considered giving up on becoming an idol. She later stated that watching her friends debut on television reignited her desire to pursue an idol career.[4]

On July 7, 2021, Mashiro was announced as a contestant on the Mnet survival show Girls Planet 999, representing 143 Entertainment with future Kep1er member Kang Ye-seo. Her official profile was released on July 19, listing her as one of the program's 33 Japanese contestants. The program aired from August 6 to October 22. In the finale, Mashiro ranked eighth overall with 708,149 points, thus making her a member of Kep1er .

2021-2024: Kep1er

In November 2021, Mashiro was appointed as the co-leader of the group along Yujin during a live broadcast.[5] On January 3, 2022, she made her debut in the group with the release of their debut mini album First Impact.[6]

On May 30, WakeOne announced that Mashiro and Yeseo will not renew the contract with Kep1er.[7] Mashiro departed from the group after the group's concerts in Yokohama, Japan on July 15.[8]

2024–present: Madein and Madein S

On July 16, 2024, 143 Entertainment reported that Mashiro and Yeseo will re-debut as Madein in September.[9] Madein debuted on September 3, 2024, with their extended play Rise (상승).[10]. On September 26, it was announced that Mashiro would become a DJ for Japanese Radio program from NTT Docomo Studio&Live titled Mashiro's Rise Up Radio starting from October 5.[11]

Mashiro debuted in Madein S, the group's first sub unit that consist its Japanese members.[12]

Endorsements

On November 9, 2023, Mashiro became an ambassador for the Japanese skincare brand Hadakara. On April 14, 2024, PEACH C announced that they have appointed Mashiro as their new brand ambassador. In December 2024, Mashiro was selected as the brand ambassador of eye beauty care brand Ooha Beauty and became their muse both in Korea and Japan.[13]
