Early life and education
Rouhani was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1946. He began his musical training at the age of eight. Although he initially earned a BSc in Economics, he pivoted to music, enrolling at the University of Tehran's College of Fine Arts.[1][2]
He later won a full scholarship to the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London. At the RCM, he completed postgraduate studies and an MMus in composition under the tutelage of Philip Cannon and Anthony Milner. During this period, he also received advanced composition lessons from the renowned composer Sir Michael Tippett.
Career
Following his studies in London, Rouhani returned to Iran, where he served as a professor at the College of Fine Arts and the Tehran Conservatoire of Music for two years. He returned to the United Kingdom in 2000, settling in London.
Rouhani frequently travels to Iran to conduct masterclasses for aspiring composers. In 2016, he was commissioned by UNICEF to compose music for a "Peace" concert at London’s Barbican. The work was premiered by his daughter, soprano Honey Rouhani, and the Docklands Sinfonia conducted by Spencer Down.[3]
Works
Rouhani's compositions blend Western classical traditions with Iranian influences. His works have been performed internationally in the United Kingdom, USA, Germany, Austria, and Bulgaria. He has published several albums through Hermes Records.
