Draft:Merryhill School

Private school From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Merryhill School is a group of private preschools, elementary, and middle schools in the United States. Founded in 1949 in Sacramento, California, it is one of the oldest continuously operating private school brands on the West Coast. As of 2026, Merryhill operates in California, Nevada, Colorado, and Texas.[1]

  • Comment: The draft article has been improved by reducing the promotional tone, but the only new source - the Bahrain sale - does not mention Merryhill, and so we are left with one key source - the NY Times - and some passing references. The encyclopedia.com is an aggregating source, perhaps drawn from the Philadelphia Business Journal. Under WP:SIRS we need more robust, multiple, in-depth and independent sourcing. History

The first Merryhill School opened in 1949 in Sacramento, California. The original campus began as a church annex and served five preschool-aged children. The organization opened two additional locations offering preschool and elementary education.[2]

In the late 1970s, the schools were acquired by former public school superintendent Dr. Donald Leisey who expanded the network and introduced before- and after-school programs. By 1980, the school expanded to over 20 locations in California, including the addition of middle school grades at the flagship campus.[3]

Merryhill was acquired in 1989 by Rocking Horse Child Care Center, Inc. The organization was renamed to Nobel Learning Communities in 1993 and later Nobel Learning Communities in 1998.[4] Nobel Learning Communities was described by Education Week as the largest for-profit operator of private elementary schools in the United States.[5] A 1995 Forbes article on mid-market private schools covered Nobel's business model[6], and Fortune magazine profiled the company's growth in a 2001 story on education stocks.[7]

In 2018, Nobel Learning Communities was acquired by Spring Education Group, under which Merryhill continues to operate today.[8][9]

Academics and curriculum

Merryhill School elementary and middle school campuses offer a standards-based curriculum that includes core academic subjects alongside specialty classes in art, music, technology, Spanish, and physical education.[10]

Accreditation

Several Merryhill preschools are accredited by National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).[11] Elementary and middle school campuses are listed in the Western Accrediting Commission for Schools (WASC) [12][13] and Cognia directories.[14][15]

Campus openings and relocations

In April 2013, the Roseville Planning Commission approved Merryhill's relocation to 1115 Orlando Avenue, converting a former offer building into a K-8 campus.[16]

In January 2017, a Merryhill Preschool opened in Aurora, Colorado, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5678 S. Himalaya Street.[17]

In May 2025, Merryhill opened a new preschool location in Midtown Sacramento with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Sacramento City Council members and Chamber of Commerce Representatives.[18]
