Michael Ayley (born November 1, 1980) is a Canadian musician, best known as the bassist and backing vocalist for the pop rock band, Marianas Trench. In 2020, Ayley embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut single "The World Needs Christmas". His debut studio album, Golden Hour, First Things First was released on October 18, 2022.

Early life

Ayley was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia.[1] He cites early influences from The Beatles and Queen, as well as personal influences from Depeche Mode, The Cure and The Smashing Pumpkins.[2] Before joining Marianas Trench, Ayley worked as a waiter.[3]

Career

Marianas Trench

Ayley joined Marianas Trench in 2004, as the band's bassist. The group has released six studio albums, Fix Me (2006), Masterpiece Theatre (2009), Ever After (2011), Astoria (2015), Phantoms (2019) and Haven (2024).[4]

Solo music

Ayley released his debut single in November 2020, titled "The World Needs Christmas", along with his wife Emily.[5] He stated that the idea had been in the works for a while, with writing taking place during the summer of 2020.[6] He also said the inspiration behind the song was from the perspective of finding hope and optimism instead of defeat and sadness, an experience he felt after his flights were cancelled and was unable to see his wife's family due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[6]

Equipment

Ayley plays a Fender Precision Bass, a 2003 model Thunderbird bass with a modified Seymour Duncan pickups, a 1968 Fender Telecaster Bass, 1978 Gibson RD Bass and a Rickenbacker Bass.[7] Ayley used his Telecaster bass during the recording sessions for the band's album, Astoria.[8]
