Moruf Oseni is a Nigerian banker and business executive who serves as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank Plc. He assumed the role on the 1st of April, 2023 after regulatory approval by the Central Bank of Nigeria.[1]

Before becoming chief executive, he was part of the senior management team at the bank since joining the bank in 2012 as an Executive Director. [2] His work at the bank has included involvement in its digital banking strategy and the development of ALAT, a digital platform introduced in 2017.[3]

Education

Moruf Oseni attended King's College, Lagos before proceeding to Obafemi Awolowo University, where he studied Computer Engineering and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree.[2]

He later earned a Master of Finance from London Business School and an MBA from INSEAD. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.[4]

Career

Early career

Oseni started his career in investment banking, in London working with Salomon Brothers (later part of Citigroup) Global Markets. [2] He later moved to Renaissance Capital, where he worked in emerging markets.

After his time in banking, he led MG Ineso Limited as managing director, focusing on investment and advisory services.[2]

Wema Bank

Oseni joined Wema Bank in 2012 as an Executive Director and became part of the bank’s executive management during a period of restructuring and strategic change.[2]

In 2018, he was appointed Deputy Managing Director, taking on broader responsibility across retail banking, operations and technology.[2]

In 2023, he briefly served as Acting Managing Director, following the retirement of Ademola Adebise as CEO of the bank, before being confirmed as substantive Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in April 2023.[1]

Digital banking

Oseni has been linked with the development of ALAT by Wema, a digital banking platform launched in 2017. The platform enables customers to carry out banking transactions without visiting physical branches.[3]

Coverage in business media has described ALAT as part of the bank’s broader shift towards digital banking services.[5]

Corporate initiatives

In 2025, Wema Bank marked its 80th anniversary with a Children's Day initiative which saw a 12-year-old student served as a one-day Managing Director.[6][7]

Other activities

Oseni has served on the board of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), which oversees interbank payment infrastructure in Nigeria.[8]

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) and is also a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management and the Institute of Directors.[9]
