History
Mutani was founded in Antwerp by designer and researcher Shayli Harrison.[1] Harrison studied fashion design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp). The project developed from Harrison’s design practice and later expanded into a research-led exploration of identity, dress, and digital culture.[2]
Design
Mutani’s collections draw on visual motifs associated with character design, fictional worlds, and fantasy narratives, adapting these influences into contemporary fashion garments. Many pieces are designed to be styled in multiple ways, reflecting cultures of customization present in gaming communities.
Research and influences
Mutani’s design approach is informed by Harrison’s research into digital identity and avatars. Harrison is affiliated with the AP School of Arts Antwerp research group MAXLab. Her research project Between Ego and Alter-Ego: avatars, cosplay and constructing identity examines how digital avatars and cosplay practices influence identity formation across virtual and physical environments, referencing concepts such as the Proteus effect, which describes how the characteristics of an avatar can influence user behaviour.[3]
Exhibitions and events
Projects related to Mutani have been presented at fashion, design, and cultural events including SCOPE Art Show Miami, the Design Museum Den Bosch, and the Future Front Row digital fashion show presented during Amsterdam Fashion Week.[4] Additional showcases and presentations have taken place at design and technology festivals including Love Tomorrow Festival and Brazilian Immersive Fashion Week.[5]
Talks and lectures
Harrison has participated in talks, panels, and workshops on fashion, digital culture, and emerging design technologies. She has spoken at institutions including the University of Antwerp, Antwerp Management School, and Central Saint Martins, as well as industry events such as Us By Night and Inhorgenta Munich.[6]
Awards and recognition
Harrison and Mutani have received recognition including selection for the Henry van de Velde Awards in the Business Innovation and Digital Product categories in 2023. Harrison was also included in the Knack 40 Under 40 to watch list in 2023, the Marie Claire list of influential female voices in Belgian fashion in 2024, and was nominated as Changemaker of the Year at the Belgian Fashion Awards in 2022.[7]
Media coverage
Mutani and its founder have been featured in fashion and cultural media discussing digital fashion and gaming-influenced design. Publications that have covered the project include CNN Style, ELLE, De Tijd, ShowStudio, Scandinavian Mind, and FashionUnited.[8]
