Mátyás Bartha (born 23 October 1991) is a Hungarian jazz pianist, composer, and educator. He has performed internationally and collaborated with numerous jazz musicians. Since 2015, he has been based in Vienna, Austria. In 2023, he began teaching jazz piano and improvisation at the Music Conservatory of Innsbruck.[1]

He has appeared in Hungarian and Austrian jazz media, including broadcasts on ORF Ö1.[2]

Early life and education

Bartha began his musical studies at the age of eight in Szentendre, Hungary,[3] and later studied jazz piano with János Nagy at the music school in Pomáz.[4]

He continued his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz under the guidance of Olaf Polziehn.[5]

During this period, he studied and performed with Stjepko Gut, Michael Abene, Dena DeRose, and Renato Chicco.[6]

As a young musician, he was selected twice to participate in the Generations festival in Frauenfeld, Switzerland.[7]

Career

Since 2015, Bartha has been based in Vienna, Austria, where he performs with various jazz musicians.[8]

In 2015, he co-founded the Coquette Jazz Band with Mátyás Papp, focusing on swing music of the 1930s and 1940s.[9]

In 2016, he started an international project with Guillem Arnedo, the Bartha/Arnedo Quartet.[10]

Since 2023, he has been teaching jazz piano and improvisation at the Music Conservatory of Innsbruck.[11]
