The agency represents more than 500 wildlife photographers and filmmakers and distributes collections of natural history photographs and footage for editorial, commercial and publishing clients worldwide.[1][2]
History
Nature Picture Library originated in 1995 as the BBC Natural History Unit Picture Library, created to manage and license still photography associated with productions of the BBC Natural History Unit in Bristol.[3]
In 2002 the operation became independent from the BBC and was relaunched as Nature Picture Library.[2] The company was later established as Nature Picture Library Limited, a private limited company registered in England and Wales.[4]
Helen Gilks managed the library from its founding until 2023. The company subsequently transitioned to an employee ownership trust structure.[2]
Collections and photographers
Nature Picture Library licenses still photographs and video footage depicting wildlife behaviour, habitats, plants, landscapes and environmental themes.[1] Its archive includes more than 500,000 images and video clips produced by specialist wildlife photographers and filmmakers.[1][2]
Photographers represented by the agency have included Tim Laman, Joel Sartore, Anup Shah and Jo-Anne McArthur.
The agency also collaborates with conservation photography initiatives and projects documenting biodiversity and environmental issues.[2]
