The Nomadic Aviation Group is a global aircraft ferry, flight test, and crew leasing company based in Delaware, United States.[1][2] The group specializes in delivering and transporting transport category aircraft around the world for airline and aircraft lessor customers. Missions include delivering aircraft for conversion from passenger configurations to freighters; repossessing and repatriating aircraft on behalf of lessors; and testing aircraft before they are entered into regular commercial service.[3][4] The company also offers ACMI leasing, air operator certificate resources, airworthiness resources, and more.[5][6]

The company flies on behalf of a large collection of airlines, lessors, and operators. It provided consulting and support to aircraft lessors whose planes were stuck in Russia after the country's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 left Russia vulnerable to sanctions.[7]

History

Initial Operations

The company's core group of pilots began ferrying aircraft together in 1999 before founding any major company.[3][8]

Founder Bob Allen initially founded Avia Crew Leasing, a contract crew provisioning service based in Arizona.[9] Allen originally began his business by ferrying airplanes on behalf of aircraft lessors when the airlines he worked for went bankrupt.[10]

Jet Test International

Nomadic Aviation's predecessor, Jet Test International, began operations as early as 2006.[8] Under a Bermudian Air Operators Certificate, the original airline served much the same purpose as Nomadic eventually would: ferrying planes and performing test flights after maintenance and modification.[11]

After a three-month pause due to international COVID-19 travel restrictions, Jet Test International flew often during the COVID-19 pandemic to return planes to lessors after aviation industries were largely shut down around the world and airlines needed to store idle aircraft.[11]

Founding of Nomadic Aviation

Jet Test International became Nomadic Aviation Group in 2021. Though it performs many similar functions, Nomadic is an entirely new company.[5][6] The new branding aimed to focus on the company's unique lifestyle, particularly that its pilots do not base themselves in one particular area or focus on a specific route; rather, they operate in various countries based on their clients' needs.[10]

The first Nomadic-branded trip was a Boeing 737-800 flown from Spokane, Washington to Brisbane, Australia.[10]

Media

Cockpit Casual

A YouTube channel called Cockpit Casual (previously SpeedTape Films) after its premiere video and podcast series details the day-to-day lives of Nomadic’s pilots while they’re on the road.[12] The films are produced by one of Nomadic's Managing Directors. Another Nomadic pilot manages a TikTok account detailing day-to-day operations.[2][3][4]

A weekly video podcast was added in 2026, featuring guests to discuss topics such as the logistics of the ferry business; airline strategy; the impact of modern events on aircraft ferry; and the hosts' personal stories and experiences from their careers.[13]

Appearance on The Rehearsal

Nomadic Aviation employees were involved in the finale of Season 2 of The Rehearsal, a show in which host Nathan Fielder became a commercial pilot type-rated in the Boeing 737. Nomadic Aviation pilots assisted Fielder as he flew around a group of actors in an airplane leased from Avelo Airlines, and Fielder revealed he occasionally acts as a ferry pilot on Nomadic's staff moving Boeing 737s around the world.[14][15][16]

Notable Aircraft Ferries

In 2023, the company was enlisted to ferry Mexico's controversial Presidential Jet, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, to its new owner in Tajikistan.[3] That same year, the company flew a Condor Boeing 767 to China for conversion to a freighter aircraft.[17] In 2024, the company flew the last Boeing 747s belonging to Air India to new owners or to retirement in Roswell, New Mexico.[18][19]

In 2024, Nomadic ferried an Airbus Corporate Jets ACJ319 that had operated for the Cote d'Ivoire government to the Tucson International Airport for storage.[20]
