ORBIT RRI Ltd
ORBIT RRI Ltd is a UK-based not-for-profit organisation focused on training and support in Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), an approach that seeks to ensure research and innovation processes are ethical, inclusive and socially responsive.[1] It originated from an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded project led by the University of Oxford and De Montfort University.[2]
History
ORBIT was initially established as a research project to support the integration of Responsible Research and Innovation within information and communication technologies (ICT). The project was funded by EPSRC and aimed to provide tools, training and guidance to researchers.[3]
Following the completion of the initial project, ORBIT RRI Ltd was formed as a company limited by guarantee to continue this work.[4]
Activities
ORBIT RRI Ltd provides training, consultancy and resources to support the implementation of Responsible Research and Innovation across research and innovation contexts.[5]
Its activities include the delivery of training programmes for doctoral researchers and academic staff, particularly within UK Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs).[6]
These programmes focus on embedding RRI principles such as anticipation, reflection, inclusion and responsiveness within research practice.[7]
Although ORBIT originated in the context of information and communication technologies, its work has since expanded to support a wide range of research domains. According to the Oxford University Innovation Impact Report (2023), ORBIT has delivered training across more than 30 technology areas, including artificial intelligence, agriculture, biomedical science, chemistry and engineering.[8]
Partnerships and reach
ORBIT’s work has been integrated into doctoral training programmes funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), including EPSRC-supported Centres for Doctoral Training.[9]
References to ORBIT’s training activities appear in REF 2021 environment statements and UKRI documentation relating to doctoral training and responsible innovation.[10]
The organisation is also associated with Oxford University Innovation as part of its social venture portfolio.[11]
Approach
ORBIT’s work is informed by established Responsible Research and Innovation frameworks, including the AREA framework (Anticipate, Reflect, Engage, Act), which is widely used within UK research policy contexts.[12]
