"Ojo Okichi" (also known as "お譲お吉" or "Ms. Okichi") is a 1935 Japanese drama film directed by Tatsunosuke Takashima with help from Kenji Mizoguchi and produced by the studio Daiichi Eiga-sha. The film was believed to have been lost, but was later rediscovered.[1][2]

Plot Synopsis

Okichi (played by Isuzu Yamada) is the daughter of a bankrupt innkeeper. While her brother has gotten into conning people, she is betrothed to the son of a very wealthy couple to try and gain her families money back. She pretends to be the wealthy, cultured daughter of a samurai, but refuses to meet the man in person. At the wedding, Okichi substitutes herself for another woman, and when the man figures out he pays her to keep quiet. Meanwhile, Okichi falls in love with another man named Hanjiro (played by Toshio Hayashi). Okichi becomes entwined in her brothers scams, and is almost arrested by the police, but later runs away with Hanjiro.[3][4]

Production

The film was directed by Tatsunosuke Takashima and Kenji Mizoguchi. The script was written by Matsutarō Kawaguchi. Music for the film was composed by Randô Fukuda and sound effects were made by Itsuki Morita and Shigenobu Susuki. Cinematography was done by Kichishirô Uchisumi. Sets were designed by Kazuo Hanatani, Goro Hisamitsu, and Gonjirô Saitô.[5][6]

Rediscovery

The film was not listed in either of the directors filmogrophies.[8] In 2008, the film was rediscovered in a film vault in Shochiku and broadcast on Japanese TV. The film was released in the United States on October 31st, 2014 at the MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation.
