Omar Khattab is a computer scientist and assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he is affiliated with the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).[1] His work includes papers on the information-retrieval model ColBERT and the language-model programming framework DSPy.[2][3]

Education and career
Khattab received a BS in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University and a PhD in computer science from Stanford University.[4] Before joining MIT, he worked as a research scientist at Databricks.[4]
Research
Khattab co-authored ColBERT: Efficient and Effective Passage Search via Contextualized Late Interaction over BERT, published in 2020, which introduced the ColBERT retrieval model.[2] He later co-authored Relevance-guided Supervision for OpenQA with ColBERT in Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics.[5] In 2024, he was the lead author of DSPy: Compiling Declarative Language Model Calls into State-of-the-Art Pipelines, an ICLR paper on programming and optimizing multi-stage language-model pipelines.[3]
