Company

OpenRouter was founded in April 2023 by Alex Atallah and Louis Vichy.[1] Atallah previously co-founded OpenSea, the first and largest non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace, where he served as CTO.[2] The company is headquartered in the United States.[3]

Product

OpenRouter's platform aggregates over 300 LLMs from providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and Mistral AI, routing requests through a single OpenAI-compatible API endpoint.[1] The service provides features including automatic failover across providers, unified billing, and optional zero-logging modes. OpenRouter also publishes public LLM leaderboards and usage statistics that have been cited as an industry data source.[1]

Funding and growth

In June 2025, OpenRouter raised $40 million in combined Seed and Series A financing, led by Andreessen Horowitz and Menlo Ventures, with participation from Sequoia Capital.[4][5] Annual inference spending on the platform grew from $10 million in October 2024 to over $100 million by May 2025.[1]
