Life & career
Matias earned his Bachelor of Music in 2010 from The Juilliard School in New York City.[3] He later completed an M.F.A. in Musical Theatre Writing at NYU Tisch.[2] During his graduate studies, he was recruited as a keyboardist for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.[4]
In 2013, Matias began music-directing and conducting the original production of Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.[1] He remained with the production through its 2016 Broadway opening at the Imperial Theatre, which starred Josh Groban and received 12 Tony Award nominations.[5]
Matias has served as music director for several significant theatrical works, including Michael John LaChiusa's First Daughter Suite at The Public Theater and Malloy’s Moby-Dick at the American Repertory Theater.[6][7][8] He was the music director and a co-producer for the original cast album of the a cappella musical Octet, released by Nonesuch Records. For his work on Octet, he was awarded an Obie Award for excellence in music and sound.[9][10] Matias collaborated with Malloy on the musical fantasia Preludes at Lincoln Center Theater. He served as the production's music director and pianist while also appearing on stage as the historical figure Sergei Rachmaninoff.[11] Matias received a nomination for the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical.[12][13]
As a composer, his original musical The Wave premiered at Landestheater Linz in 2021. The production was awarded five Deutscher Musical Theater Preis awards, including Best Musical and Best Score.[14]
Matias is a faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music, and was named Dean of Musical Theatre for the institution in 2026.[2]
In 2026, Matias was announced as the music supervisor and music director for the musical adaptation of Black Swan. Written by Dave Malloy and Jen Silverman, the production is scheduled to debut at the American Repertory Theater's Loeb Drama Center in May 2026.[15]
