Indian entrepreneur and former research scientist From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pankaj Agarwal is an Indian-born entrepreneur and former research scientist based in Liechtenstein.[1] He co-founded Indian Energy Limited, a wind-power company operating in India that was admitted to the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange in 2009.[1][2][3] He later established Panitek, through which he has worked on the commercialisation of clean-energy technologies between Europe and India.[4][5][1] Earlier in his career, he conducted research in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at the University of Florida and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).[1][6][7]

Education and scientific career

Agarwal grew up in Kolkata. He studied chemical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, completed a PhD in chemical engineering at the University of Florida in 1994, and later earned an MBA from Rotterdam School of Management.[1][6][7]

His doctoral research concerned measurement models for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. He co-authored papers on the interpretation, error structure and consistency of impedance spectra, including work using the Kramers–Kronig relations to evaluate experimental data.[7][8][9][10]

After completing his doctorate, Agarwal worked as a research scientist at EPFL in Lausanne. He subsequently moved from academic research into technology commercialisation and international business development.[1][6]

Entrepreneurship and technology commercialisation

In 2007, Agarwal co-founded Indian Energy Limited, which developed and operated wind-energy projects in India.[1][6] The company was admitted to AIM in 2009, raising capital to finance the expansion of its wind-power portfolio in India. British business newspapers reported on the fundraising and the company's plans for expansion. [2][3] Agarwal was involved in the company’s early management and later served on its board.[1][6]

Agarwal later focused on cross-border technology commercialisation through Panitek. A 2013 profile in Wirtschaft Ostschweiz described his work connecting European renewable-energy companies with opportunities in India and discussed projects combining wind and solar generation for locations dependent on diesel power.[4]

A 2020 Wirtschaft Regional feature reported that Panitek evaluates technologies and business models and develops market-entry and investment strategies, and may participate in Indian joint ventures.[5] A 2021 profile in VP Bank’s Telescope described the company as working with European small and medium-sized technology businesses seeking access to the Indian market. It cited Panitek’s involvement in establishing the Indian operations of the Swiss battery manufacturer Leclanché and described a model combining market development with investment in local ventures.[1]

A 2022 interview in the Liechtenstein magazine Herzblut focused on Agarwal’s views on distributed electricity generation, energy storage and smart-grid development.[11]

Public engagement

In 2015, Agarwal and other residents founded the India Club in Liechtenstein. The organisation introduced India Week, a programme intended to present a contemporary and diverse picture of India through cultural events and public discussions. Later editions also included sustainability, business and educational themes.[12][13]

Liechtenstein newspapers continued to report on India Week and Agarwal’s role in organising it; the programme marked its tenth anniversary in 2025.[12][13][14]

Agarwal has also participated in public forums on India–Liechtenstein economic relations and the energy transition. In 2024, Liechtensteiner Vaterland reported on his involvement in a Destination India event concerning the EFTA–India trade agreement. In 2025, he took part in an energy-systems panel at the ET NOW Global Business Summit.[15][16]
