Taxonomy
Paramicrosporidium saccamoebae was described by Corsaro and colleagues in 2014 in a study of microsporidia-like parasites of amoebae.[1] Index Fungorum lists the name as Paramicrosporidium saccamoebae Corsaro, Walochnik, D. Venditti, J. Steinmann, K.-D. Müll. & R. Michel.[2]
The species has been placed among microsporidia-like organisms related to Rozellomycota, a group of intracellular parasites close to the base of the fungal tree.[1]
Discovery and culture
The strain was isolated from mud and decaying plant material from a pond near Egestorf in the Lüneburg Heath, Germany.[3]
Biology
The organism produces spores resembling those of microsporidia-like parasites, although molecular studies placed it with rozellid or rozellomycotan lineages rather than with typical Microsporidia.[1]
