Paul S. P. Cowpertwait is a statistician whose research has focused on stochastic rainfall modelling, time series analysis, and point process models in hydrology. His work includes research on Neyman–Scott and related clustered point process models for rainfall, including applications to rainfall generation, urban drainage design, and spatial-temporal rainfall modelling.[1][2]

Education

Cowpertwait completed a PhD at Newcastle University in 1991. His thesis, The stochastic generation of rainfall time series, proposed and validated a stochastic rainfall time series model for the United Kingdom, with application to sewer system design.[1]

Research and career

Cowpertwait developed stochastic point process models for rainfall, including single-site and spatial-temporal models. In 1994, he published a generalized point process model for rainfall in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A: Mathematical and Physical Sciences.[3] In 1995, he published a generalized spatial-temporal rainfall model based on a clustered point process, also in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A.[4]

In 1996, Cowpertwait co-authored two papers in the Journal of Hydrology on stochastic point process modelling of rainfall, covering single-site fitting and validation, regionalisation, and disaggregation.[5][6] A UK Climate Projections science report later described the Neyman–Scott Rectangular Pulses model used in UK weather generation as the basis for standard UK urban drainage design software, citing Cowpertwait and co-authors' 1996 work.[2]

Cowpertwait was affiliated with the Institute of Information and Mathematical Sciences at Massey University in Auckland, New Zealand, during the writing of the textbook Introductory Time Series with R.[7] The book, co-authored with Andrew V. Metcalfe and published by Springer in 2009, introduces time series analysis using the R programming language.[7]

Cowpertwait also published work on spatial-temporal rainfall modelling for the Thames catchment,[8] stochastic rainfall modelling for Auckland City,[9] and spatial-temporal point process models with continuous storm-type distributions.[10]
