Early Life and Education
Paul Goodenough was born on September 7, 1977, at Odstock Hospital in Salisbury, England. He attended the Minster Church of England Primary School in Warminster and later Kingdown School for his secondary education. Due to financial constraints, Goodenough was unable to attend university. Instead, he pursued a creative career but faced challenges finding employment as an 18-year-old. To overcome these obstacles, he founded his first business, Aer Studios (formerly Aerian Studios).[1]
Producer, Writer, and TV Career
In 1996, at the age of 18, Paul Goodenough founded the digital agency Aer Studios, which specializes in campaigns, websites, products, and mobile apps. The company has collaborated with notable organizations such as the BBC, CNN, Warner Bros, Sky, Vodafone, BAFTA, and the UK Government.[2] Under Goodenough's leadership as CEO and later Chief Creative Officer (CCO), Aer Studios became one of the most respected agencies in the UK. He stepped down as CEO in 2019 to establish Rewriting Extinction and later resigned as CCO in 2022 when Rewriting Extinction became an independent charity.[3]
In 2011, Goodenough co-founded the production company GBK Hybrid alongside Gary Kurtz, producer of Star Wars, and Richard Bazley, an animator known for The Iron Giant and Disney productions.[4] He served as a development executive, writer, and executive producer for GBK Hybrid until the company was dissolved following Kurtz’s passing in 2018.[5] During his tenure at GBK Hybrid, Goodenough contributed to several productions, including Offbeat and the short film Centurion Resurrection, which won eleven awards and received one nomination in 2015.[6]
In 2015, Goodenough earned an Emmy nomination for his role as a producer on the TV movie Lost Treasure Hunt, which was recognized at the 42nd Daytime Emmy Awards in the category Outstanding New Approaches - Original Daytime Program or Series.[7] The movie also garnered four additional awards and four further nominations between 2014 and 2016.[8] As a writer, Goodenough has worked for brands including How To Train Your Dragon, 2000 AD, G.I. Joe, Sherlock Holmes, Warhammer 40K, Have I Got News for You, The Beano, Peppa Pig, Go Jetters and many more.[9] He also played a pivotal role in transitioning the online Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy from the BBC to the public domain.[10]
Rewriting Earth
In June 2021, Paul Goodenough founded the cross-charity project Rewriting Extinction. First, it was a global 12-month campaign to raise money and awareness for both the climate and the biodiversity crisis through storytelling in the form of comics and videos.[11]
Together with the comics, videos and strong social media activity, a book with the title The Most Important Comic Book on Earth: Stories to Save the World was released in 2021 by DK, which was awarded the Sunday Times Book of the Year and Deloitte Lightbulb List made Paul Goodenough a bestselling author.[12] [13]
Money raised from the campaign was donated to seven specific projects that tackled biodiversity issues with the goal of solving them within twelve months of the campaign.[14] After the deadline had passed, Rewriting Extinction had achieved many of the set goals. Within one year and with the help of comics and the book, they raised £1.54 million for the different charities involved and have protected 662 species with important milestones like helping the World Land Trust purchase and protect Guatemala’s Laguna Grand Reserve.[15]
Paul Goodenough has received international press for his successful efforts with Rewriting Extinction, including features on BBC, Fox News, The Guardian, The Times, and being awarded the honorary title of a Greenhouse Game Changer.[16]
Following the success of the 12-month campaign, Rewriting Extinction became its own charity in mid-2022, expanding beyond comics into the creation of social media films, short films, animations, TV shows and feature films to introduce new audiences to environmental issues and solutions, with notable collaborations with Idris Elba, Ricky Gervais, Jane Goodall, Taika Waititi, Cara Delevingne and over 300 more. Speaking about the initiative, Delevingne remarked, "Through storytelling, community building, and action, we rewrite the cultural narratives driving extinction."[17]
In early 2024, the charity rebranded as Rewriting Earth, broadening its mission to help reach more audience on the environmental issues that matter to them, with key projects including the Sea Shepherd Krill campaign, changes to the UK Swift Brick Law with The Feather Speech, tackling pension investments with Jane Goodall and Peter Gabriel with Saving Jane and reaching sporting communities with Save Our Grassroots.
