Peter Mishler is an American poet and editor. He is the author of the poetry collections Fludde (2018) and Children in Tactical Gear (2024).[1][2]

Life and career

Born and raised in New Jersey, Mishler earned a BFA in literature from Emerson College and both an MS in English education and an MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University.[1] According to the University of Iowa, he is the author of two poetry collections and has served as a contributing editor for Literary Hub.[2]

Books and Awards

Mishler's first collection, Fludde (2018), was selected by Dean Young for the 2016 Kathryn A. Morton Prize in Poetry.[3][4] His second collection, Children in Tactical Gear (2024), won the 2023 Iowa Poetry Prize.[5][6]

Reception

Fludde was reviewed favorably in The Kenyon Review and the Los Angeles Review of Books, where reviewers discussed the collection as a surrealist work, drawing on folkloric and absurd elements.[7][8]

Children in Tactical Gear was discussed in PREPOSITION as a more overtly political collection in its treatment of American life.[9] It was also included on the New York Public Library's list of favorite poetry books of 2024 so far, in The Conversation's "Best Books of 2024," and in The Big Issue feature "Top 5 books to read for the American election".[10][11][12]
