Phemelo Mhlanga is a South African accounting and finance professional, youth leader, and media personality from Mahikeng, North West. He matriculated at Leteane High School in 2016 and later graduated with a BCom in Accounting from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in 2022, with a focus on Management Accounting, Taxation, Auditing, and Financial Reporting.
Mhlanga began his public journey as RCL President at Boingotlo Middle School, then took over Miss Mahikeng and later served as younger National Director under Teen Universe International, mentoring and casting delegates who represented South Africa internationally. In media, he worked on Motswedi FM, NWU FM, UCT Radio, and Cape Town TV, while also performing in theatre productions such as FORCE: A Political Thriller, I AM Trans, and Inertia.
In the corporate sector, he has worked at Takealo Group (Mr D Food Restaurant Support), Maine Management and Chartered Accounting, and PwC on Auditor‑General and large‑company audits, and is currently a consultant at Makosi Inc, providing advisory and assurance services, while remaining active in youth and community development.
Early life
Phemelo Mhlanga was born in Mahikeng, North West, South Africa, into a large family. He is the youngest of 13 children from his father’s side, Ismail Mbambeleli Mhlanga, and a middle child from his mother’s side, Julia Motatso Mhlanga.
Mhlanga grew up in Romosadi Village, in the Mahikeng area. He began his formal education at GJ Podile Primary School, before moving to Setumo Park in Grade 3 to live with his mother. He completed his primary schooling at Signal Hill Primary School, where he was known as a consistently high‑achieving student.
After primary school, Mhlanga attended Boingotlo Middle School, where he continued to excel academically and was widely recognised as a top‑achieving student throughout his school years. In 2012, while still in Grade 8, he was elected Representative Council of Learners (RCL) President at Boingotlo Middle School. He was re‑elected in 2013 while in Grade 9, serving through his final year at the school before moving to high school.
During both terms as RCL President, Mhlanga was awarded the Principal’s Award for Good Leadership in recognition of his conduct, responsibility, and service to the school community. He led the “Take a Child to Work Day” initiative at Boingotlo Middle School, coordinating pupils, parents, and staff to expose learners to various professions. He also hosted successful school fundraisers and helped run an after‑school arts programme called Bash Ba Gompieno, which provided creative outlets for learners in the community.
At Boingotlo Middle School, Mhlanga also served as an activist for Active Youth under the Youth for Christ organisation. In this role, he took part in various youth campaigns, including Crime Prevention Holidays, where he and other volunteers visited communities with high crime rates—such as Groot Marico—during school holidays to host daily activities for children. These programmes aimed to keep young people occupied and engaged in positive activities to reduce the risk of crime and antisocial behaviour, especially in disadvantaged areas.
Mhlanga went on to finish his schooling at Leteane High School in Magogoe Tloung, where he continued to excel academically and serve in the school’s Representative Council of Learners (RCL), further strengthening his profile as a student leader.
Despite coming from a disadvantaged background and being the first in his siblingship to obtain a university degree and build a professional career, Mhlanga remained adamant to be the best he could be, consistently striving for excellence in both academics and leadership.
Education
Mhlanga matriculated in 2016 at Leteane High School in Magogoe Tloung, Mahikeng, where he completed his secondary education after progressing through GJ Podile Primary, Signal Hill Primary, Boingotlo Middle School, and Leteane High. His strong academic record and leadership roles in school laid the foundation for his later entry into tertiary education and professional training.
In 2017, he relocated from Mahikeng to Cape Town to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Accounting at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). He graduated in 2022, having focused his studies on Management Accounting, Taxation, Auditing, and Financial Reporting. This combination of disciplines equipped him with skills in cost and performance analysis, tax planning and compliance, audit procedures, and the preparation and interpretation of financial statements in line with relevant accounting standards.
Following graduation, Mhlanga began furthering his education with Eduvos, where he is currently on the path to attaining professional qualifications, including the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) and Chartered Accountant (South Africa) [CA(SA)] designations. His postgraduate studies reflect his commitment to advanced expertise in accounting, finance, and strategic business leadership.
Career
After completing his BCom studies, Mhlanga transitioned into the corporate and business sector, beginning his formal career at Takealot Group Head Office, where he entered the Mr D Food Restaurant Support environment. In this role, he supported restaurant partners and suppliers within the on‑demand food‑delivery ecosystem, gaining experience in operations, stakeholder coordination, and performance‑tracking in a fast‑paced digital‑commerce environment.
Mhlanga then joined Maine Management and Chartered Accounting, where he worked largely on projects for the Auditor‑General of South Africa as an Auditor. In this position, he contributed to financial and performance audits across public‑sector institutions, sharpening his skills in compliance, risk assessment, and public‑finance reporting.
He later moved to the Big Four accounting firm PwC, where he worked on engagements for both large private companies and ongoing projects with the Auditor‑General of South Africa across the country, with a major focus in Gauteng and the North West province. At PwC, he gained exposure to more complex, high‑profile audits, improved controls testing, and reporting frameworks, further strengthening his technical accounting and audit expertise.
In parallel with his corporate‑audit roles, Mhlanga has remained engaged in accounting and business‑management work for private enterprises and family‑owned businesses, including Umhlanga Legacy (Pty) Ltd, where he supports financial reporting, compliance, and operational performance. His background in hospitality management and dental‑care practice operations gives him a broad perspective on SME administration, customer service, and regulatory compliance.
He is currently a consultant for Makosi Inc, where he provides advisory and assurance services to clients, drawing on his experience in audit, corporate finance, and business operations.
Youth Leadership and Pageantry
In 2014, at the age of 16 and while still in Grade 10 at Leteane High School, Mhlanga took over Miss Mahikeng, a youth and community‑oriented pageant based in Mahikeng. He hosted the first Miss Mahikeng preliminaries in August 2014 at Thatch Haven, and the finale later that year at the Mmabatho Civic Centre, staging both events without formal sponsors and relying largely on community support.
In 2015, Mhlanga gained the support of a local doctor, Dr Kwame Amoa‑Mensah, who became his mentor and provided guidance and resources as he expanded the pageant’s reach and professionalism. Under Dr Amoa‑Mensah’s mentorship, Mhlanga strengthened the structure and visibility of Miss Mahikeng, deepening his understanding of project management, stakeholder engagement, and public leadership.
In 2016, Mhlanga secured a partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture, which allowed him to host the Miss Mahikeng finale pageant week at Golden Leopard Resort (also known as Cookes Lake). This marked a major step up in scale and production, showcasing his ability to coordinate large‑format events and work with government and private‑sector partners.
Mhlanga also casted Taahirah Tshotse (née Zungu), who was Miss Mahikeng 2014, to represent the pageant as Teen Universe South Africa 2015. She was sashed by the then MEC of Arts and Culture, Hon Tebogo Modisa, in a formal handover ceremony. During his Matric year in 2016, Mhlanga travelled with the team to Costa Rica for the Teen Universe International Finale, where Taahirah won Best National Dance and placed South Africa in the Top 16, marking a significant milestone for the Mahikeng‑based franchise on the international stage.
Following this, Mhlanga continued to support the Teen Universe South Africa programme under the Teen Universe International network. Kopano Seriba was crowned Teen Universe 2016, and Goitumetse Matolong was crowned Teen Universe 2017, with Mhlanga playing a key role in identifying, grooming, and coordinating delegates from the North West region.
Mhlanga’s time with Miss Mahikeng [4] and Teen Universe South Africa positioned him as a young leader in North West youth development, using the platform to promote talent, discipline, and community upliftment.
Media and Theatre Career
After relocating to Cape Town in 2017, Mhlanga continued building his presence in the media and entertainment industry. He auditioned for the youth‑focused current‑affairs show Hectic Nine‑9, where he was later invited to guest present on the programme, gaining exposure to national television production and live audience formats.
Mhlanga also advanced to the call‑back stage for the Presenter Search on the 3 Expresso Edition, a breakfast‑TV presenter‑search initiative, further showcasing his presenting skills to broader audiences. In 2018, he placed in the Cape Town Top 25 for the MTV Base VJ Search, highlighting his ability to connect with youth and entertainment‑focused content.
Mhlanga began his media journey earlier, while still in Mahikeng, when he joined North West University FM (NWU FM) as the youngest on‑air personality at the station. He hosted “The Calabash” from 9:00–12:00, later moving to weekday “Study Time” from 18:00–21:00, and occasionally covered Drive Time news. One of his notable interviews on NWU FM was with Amanda Black, shortly after she received her first Metro FM Awards nominations—five in total. The interview took place on his morning show “The Focus” (9:00–12:00 on 105.5 FM) and helped spotlight both the rising artist and Mhlanga’s growing reputation as a skilled interviewer.
After moving to Cape Town, Mhlanga went on to join UCT Radio, the student radio station of the University of Cape Town. At UCT Radio he worked in news production and co‑hosted a radio show with Kgaugelo KC Mokholwane of Mzansi Insider, a collaboration that ran from 2019 until 2021. The show allowed him to blend current affairs, youth culture, and entertainment in a university‑based platform, further refining his broadcasting and editorial skills.
In 2021, Mhlanga left UCT Radio to focus on his corporate career debut at Takealot Group Head Office, marking a shift from full‑time media work to a more structured professional role in business and administration.
