The company operates globally through subsidiaries including DNEG, an Academy Award-winning VFX studio, Brahma AI and Prime Focus Studios.[1] Prime Focus is among the key contributors to several technology innovations in the Indian film market.
Prime Focus Limited is headquartered in Mumbai with 23 locations across North America, Europe, and Australia.
History
Prime Focus Limited (PFL) was founded in 1997 by filmmaker Namit Malhotra in Mumbai, India.[1][2] The company began as a post-production services provider for television programming, advertising, and music videos, before expanding into feature films in the Indian market.[3]
During the early 2000s, Prime Focus introduced several post-production technologies in India, including digital intermediate workflows, film scanning and recording services, and motion control systems.[4] The company also entered into visual effects production, co producing its first VFX feature film in 2004.[3]
Public Listing and Expansion
In 2006, Prime Focus Limited completed an Initial Public Offering (IPO) and was listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Exchange of India.[4]
That same year, Prime Focus acquired UK-based post-production company VTR plc which was its first major overseas acquisition. The company then expanded into North America through acquisitions in the United States and Canada.[5]
In 2009, Prime Focus launched Prime Focus Technologies, introducing the CLEAR platform for cloud-based content management and workflows.[1][6]
Acquisition of Double Negative (DNEG)
In July 2014, Prime Focus merged its international operations with London-based visual effects studio Double Negative. Following the merger, the company rebranded as DNEG and continued to operate as a subsidiary of Prime Focus Limited.[1]
DNEG has since expanded from 700 people to 9,000 staff across 19 locations, earning multiple Academy Awards, BAFTAs, and VES Awards for films like Interstellar, Blade Runner 2049, Tenet and the Dune movies.[7]
Recent Developments
Prime Focus Studios was established as the production arm of the group, with projects across film, television, and gaming.[8] Brahma AI was launched in 2024, from the integration of Prime Focus Technologies (PFT), Metaphysic, and DNEG Technology.[9] The company has also expanded into artificial intelligence through the launch of Brahma AI in 2024, following the integration of Prime Focus Technologies, Metaphysic, and DNEG technology.[10][11]
