Rainer Grupe (born June 1960)[1] is a German film producer, executive, director, and former actor.[2] He is best known for producing the satirical war film Buffalo Soldiers (2001), which was nominated for the British Independent Film Award for Best Achievement in Production in 2003 (shared with Ariane Moody).[3][4]

Grupe has held senior distribution and acquisition positions at Senator Film AG (1990–1994), PolyGram Filmed Entertainment (1994-1998), and Entertainment One (eOne).[2][5] He is the managing director of Gorilla Entertainment Limited.[1] In 2026, he joined Jovera Pictures as a producer.[6]

Early work and directing
Grupe made his feature directorial debut with the 86-minute drama Tamboo (1985), which he co-wrote and directed as his diploma project at HFF München. The film starred Dieter Schidor and Elisabeth Volkmann.[7]
Distribution and executive roles
From 1990 to 1994, Grupe was Vice President of Acquisition and Distribution at Senator Film AG, where the company financed and distributed films such as the Academy Award-winning The Crying Game (1992) and Heavenly Creatures (1994).[2]
Between 1994 and 1998, he served as Vice President of International Sales at PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, where he helped establish the arthouse label PolyGram Film Classics.[2][8] Notable releases during his tenure included Dead Man Walking (1995), Trainspotting (1996), Fargo (1996), the Venice Golden Lion winner Before the Rain, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and Ridicule.[8]
In February 2008, Grupe was appointed Vice President of Filmed Entertainment at the Canadian distributor Entertainment One (eOne), overseeing theatrical and home-entertainment strategy in the UK, Benelux, Australia, France, South Africa, and other territories.[5][2]
In 2026, Grupe joined the financing and production company Jovera Pictures in an executive role, handling distribution, sales, and marketing. He serves as executive producer on the completed feature Fly Little Bird (directed by Johannes Boesiger, starring Zoë Bleu) and is involved in developing other projects including The English Warrior, an adaptation of Shaun Pinner's book Live. Fight. Survive..[6][9]
Producing
Grupe produced the black comedy Buffalo Soldiers (2001), directed by Gregor Jordan and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Ed Harris, Anna Paquin, Scott Glenn, and Idris Elba. Completed before the September 11 attacks, its wide release was delayed but the film later gained a cult following.[2][10] He also handled global sales on the documentary George Michael: A Different Story (2004).[2] Grupe served as executive producer on the 2010 action film Wrong Side of Town, starring Rob Van Dam and Dave Bautista.[5]
