Indian entrepreneur and event producer From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ramola Bachchan (born 9 October 1947) is an Indian-British entrepreneur and event producer. She was married to businessman Ajitabh Bachchan, younger brother of actor Amitabh Bachchan. In 2004 she received the Asian of the Year Award in the United Kingdom for her charitable and cultural work.

Early life and education

Ramola Bachchan grew up in Calcutta (now Kolkata). Her father, Ram Chugani, was a businessman. At the age of eleven she was sent to St Helen's School, Northwood, a boarding school in Middlesex, England. Mid-way through her A-levels she was recalled to Calcutta by her father, and subsequently enrolled at college in the city.[1]

She later joined BOAC as an air hostess, a career considered unconventional for a woman of her family background at the time.[1]

She subsequently undertook a law conversion course at the London School of Economics.[1]

Personal life

Ramola married Ajitabh Bachchan in 1973. Ajitabh is the younger brother of actor Amitabh Bachchan, whom Ramola had known since the 1960s when they moved in the same social circle in Calcutta.[2] The couple have four children: Bhim, Namrata, Naina, and Nilima.

The family relocated to Geneva in 1986. Their plans were disrupted by the Bofors scandal of 1987, in which Ajitabh was named — though no evidence against him emerged and he subsequently won a libel action in the English High Court against the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter.[1] The family subsequently moved to London, settling in the Knightsbridge area.

Ramola's daughter Namrata Bachchan is a visual artist and illustrator based in Mumbai.[3]

Career

Media and public relations (1992–1995)

After passing her law examinations at the London School of Economics in 1991, Bachchan completed articles at the London firm Lawrence Graham. During this period she was offered the role of anchorwoman for TV Asia, a British satellite channel, and host of a weekly radio discussion programme on Radio Asia.[1] Her television guests included Tony Blair, Imran Khan, Ravi Shankar and David Mellor.[1] She qualified as a solicitor in October 1994 but chose not to pursue a legal career.[1]

In 1995 she established RB Promotions, a public relations and event management firm in Knightsbridge, focused on promoting business and cultural exchange between India and the United Kingdom.[1][4]

Philanthropy and charity work

Bachchan organised fundraising events in London for organisations including the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, CARE International, the SAARC Foundation, Cancer Relief, the Macmillan Fund and Pratham UK.[5][1] Venues included the Dorchester, the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall.[1]

Hospitality (2008)

In 2008 Bachchan co-founded Manré, a fine-dining European restaurant in New Delhi, in partnership with industrialist Kanwar Deep Singh of the Alchemist Group. The restaurant received reviews from multiple national publications: India Today described it as "easily among Delhi's most expensive and exquisite fine dining spaces",[6] Outlook called the desserts "possibly the best you might eat in Delhi",[7] The Telegraph described Bachchan as "a businesswoman, one-time London socialite and charity activist" who oversaw every detail of the operation,[8] and food critic Vir Sanghvi, writing in the Hindustan Times, concluded that the restaurant "serves very good food at very reasonable prices".[9] The restaurant subsequently closed.[10]

Runway Rising (2012–present)

In 2012 Bachchan founded Runway Rising, a fashion and lifestyle exhibition platform in New Delhi.[11] By 2016 the platform had reached its twelfth edition, featuring established designers including Manish Arora.[12]

Recognition

In December 2004 Bachchan received the Asian of the Year Award at a gala ceremony in London attended by actor Dev Anand, House of Commons leader Peter Hain, and businessmen G.P. Hinduja and S.P. Hinduja. She was the third woman to receive the award in its seventeen-year history. Previous recipients included Lord Swraj Paul, Lord Navnit Dholakia, Baroness Shreela Flather and Keith Vaz.[5][4]
