Early life and education
Career
Rodriguez-Torres trained in pediatrics and specialized in pediatric cardiology. He has practiced primarily in Miami, Florida, including roles affiliated with Nicklaus Children's Hospital.[2]
In 1966, Rodriguez-Torres opened an early pediatric intensive care unit at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, focused on treating children undergoing open-heart surgery and peritoneal dialysis.[citation needed]
He later contributed to pediatric medical education and program development at Miami Children's Hospital, where he established a Continuing medical education department and supported initiatives to expand access to specialized pediatric care, including the use of telemedicine.[citation needed]
Personal life
Rodriguez-Torres was married to Guly “Gudelia” Rodriguez-Torres (1932–2021), an advocate for abused children and co-founder of The Child Abuse Prevention Project of Miami, Florida. The couple were married for 67 years.[3]
