Early life and education

Carver was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Patricia Jo Carver, a physician, and David Carver, who was active in community and professional organizations. He has two sisters, Lesley Brovner, an attorney, and Rebecca Carver, a professor. At the age of twelve, Carver was diagnosed with what was initially believed to be non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Over the next three years, he underwent extensive medical treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and multiple surgeries, resulting in the removal of a lobe of his left lung, portions of his right lung, his spleen, and his thymus. A subsequent surgery led to partial paralysis of his vocal cord.[5] Years later, it was determined that his original diagnosis had been incorrect and that he had been affected by malignant thymoma.

Due to prolonged medical treatment during his adolescence, Carver missed most of his middle school education and part of high school. During this period, he developed an early interest in finance and independently studied financial markets through daily reading of The Wall Street Journal.

Carver later enrolled at Oberlin College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and communications in 1986.[6][7][8]

Career

Early career

Following graduation, Carver entered the financial services industry in 1987, joining a regional brokerage firm and relocating to Mentor, Ohio. Within several months, he established a client base sufficient to open a branch office. Between 1987 and 1990, he served as a Branch Manager at Edward Jones.[6]

In March 1989, Carver survived a forced crash landing of a single-engine aircraft. He sustained multiple injuries, including collapsed lungs, broken ribs, a cracked larynx, and facial fractures, and was unable to speak for nearly a year. During this period, he continued working with clients through written communication with the assistance of his staff.[6][9]

Carver Financial Services

In December 1990, Carver founded Carver Financial Services, Inc., an independent financial advisory firm.[1][3][4][6][5][10][11][12] The firm affiliated with Investment Management & Research, later known as Raymond James Financial Services, Inc., enabling it to operate independently while utilizing the custodial and institutional resources of a national financial services organization. As of the mid-2020s, Carver Financial Services manages over $3 billion in client assets.

Carver has also been a Registered Principal with Raymond James Financial Services since 1990.[3]

Since 1989, Carver has taught education courses approved by accountancy boards for certified public accountants, as well as courses approved by the Supreme Court Commissions on Continuing Legal Education for attorneys.
