Background

The company was founded in 2020 by Femi Iromini and Adedapo Sobayo. Its origins trace back to an informal lending arrangement during the COVID-19 period, when the founders supported a mobile money agent who lacked access to formal credit.

Through this experience, they were introduced to a broader network of small operators facing similar challenges. Early lending activities were conducted within trusted groups, where repayment relied on social accountability rather than formal collateral. This approach later became central to the company’s model.[1]

Further reporting highlighted the company’s use of community-based trust systems to reduce default rates and expand access to credit among underserved groups.[2]

Early development

In its early phase, the company operated using messaging platforms and basic data collection tools. As demand increased, it transitioned into a structured business and developed a mobile application to manage lending and financial services.

In 2022, Moni participated in Y Combinator’s Winter cohort, after which it raised funding and expanded its operations across additional West African markets.[3]

Product expansion

Between 2022 and 2024, the company expanded beyond lending into a broader range of financial services. Its platform began to include savings products, peer-to-peer transfers, and bill payments.

Its model continued to incorporate group-based participation, reflecting informal financial systems such as rotating savings schemes and community-backed lending structures.[4]

Rebrand and acquisitions

In November 2025, the company rebranded from Moni to Rank. The rebrand coincided with the acquisition of AjoMoney, a digital savings platform, and Zazzau Microfinance Bank, a licensed financial institution.[5]

The acquisitions were part of a broader expansion strategy aimed at strengthening its financial services infrastructure.[6][7]

Additional coverage of the rebrand and acquisitions was reported by TechNext24 and Daba Finance.[8][9]

AjoMoney’s integration strengthened the company’s group savings infrastructure, while the acquisition of Zazzau Microfinance Bank enabled it to operate within Nigeria’s regulated banking framework.[10]

Operations

Rank provides financial services through its mobile application, including:

  • Savings plans with fixed and flexible structures
  • Group savings arrangements where users contribute and receive funds in rotation
  • Loans linked to user activity on the platform
  • Payments, transfers, and bill services
  • Financial advisory services introduced after the rebrand

As of 2025, the company operates across multiple African countries, including Nigeria, Benin Republic, Senegal, and Guinea.[11]
