The Regent Hotels & Resorts brand was founded in 1970. Its most well-known American property was the Regent Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, California, which gained cultural recognition as a filming location for the 1990 film Pretty Woman. The Beverly Wilshire was acquired by Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts in 1992, ending Regent's presence in the United States.[4] In 2018, IHG Hotels & Resorts acquired a majority stake in Regent Hotels & Resorts with the stated intent to expand the brand in the luxury hospitality market.[5] Regent Santa Monica Beach was announced in 2023 as the first Regent property in the Americas under IHG's ownership.[6] The hotel was developed on the site of the former Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel, a property that had occupied the Ocean Avenue address for several decades. IHG undertook a full reconstruction of the building, with the transformation costing a reported $150 million.[2]

Regent Santa Monica Beach has 167 guestrooms and suites. Base rooms begin at 720 square feet. The property's most expansive accommodation is the Santa Monica Presidential Suite, which spans 3,200 square feet and includes separate living, dining, and game rooms with panoramic ocean views. The Oceanfront Atrium Two-Story Suite covers 2,180 square feet across two floors.[7] Rooms are designed by Wimberly Interiors and feature spa-style bathrooms with soaking tubs and walk-in rain showers, in-room dining areas, and workstations.[7]

The hotel's design direction was led by Chantell Walsh of Strategic Hotels & Resorts. The public spaces were designed by AvroKO, a San Francisco-based design firm, which drew on references including luxury fashion and ocean imagery. Guestrooms and suites were designed by Wimberly Interiors. Design elements throughout the property include brass archways, yacht-style flooring, and a color palette of green, gold, and cream.[7][8]

In 2025, Regent Santa Monica Beach was awarded a Michelin Key by the Michelin Guide, an award given by the guide to hotels recognized for exceptional accommodation. The hotel received this recognition in its first year of operation.[3] The property was named to Travel + Leisure's It List 2025, which identifies notable new hotels annually. It was also listed in AFAR's Best New Hotels in the World 2025 and Esquire's Best New Hotels in the World 2025.[10]
