Summary
Development and inspiration
Ness has described Release as his most personal novel, drawing from his own experiences growing up gay in a religious household.[3]
When writing Release, Ness was inspired in particular by Forever... by Judy Blume and Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf,[4] adapting the first and last lines and using the single-day timescale of the former for Release.[5]
Reception
Writing for The Guardian, Geraldine Brennan described Release as a "passionate and disturbing novel" and praised the "frank and loving" scenes between Adam and his boyfriend.[6] Some critics of the book called for its ban.[7]
Release was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal for Writing in 2018.[3]
