Richard “Ricky” Caplin is an American entrepreneur and technology executive known for founding the healthcare information technology consulting firm The HCI Group. Following the company’s acquisition in 2017, he served in leadership roles with the global technology company Tech Mahindra. Caplin is also a co-founder and lead investor of Sporting Club Jacksonville, a professional soccer organization based in Florida.[1]

Early life and education

Caplin is a native of Northeast Florida and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in accounting from the University of Florida.[2]

Caplin began his career in consulting and accounting roles before founding The HCI Group in 2009. Industry publications have described his work as focused on helping health systems adopt and manage electronic health record technologies during a period of rapid digital transformation in healthcare.[2]

In 2009, Caplin co-founded The HCI Group, a Jacksonville-based healthcare information technology consulting firm focused on electronic health record implementation and related advisory services for health systems.[3]

The company expanded during the nationwide adoption of electronic health records, growing from a startup into a consulting firm employing several hundred professionals.[3]

In 2016, Consulting Magazine recognized Caplin as a “Rising Star of the Profession.”[3]

In 2017, Tech Mahindra announced it would acquire a majority stake in The HCI Group in a transaction valued at approximately $110 million.[4]

Following the acquisition, Caplin joined the leadership team of the combined organization and oversaw healthcare and life sciences operations.[2]

Sporting Club Jacksonville

Caplin is a co-founder and lead investor in Sporting Club Jacksonville (Sporting JAX), a professional soccer organization based in Jacksonville, Florida.[6]

The ownership group includes former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Fred Taylor.[1]

The club was announced as part of an effort to bring professional soccer back to Jacksonville through expansion teams in the USL Championship and the USL Super League.[6]

In 2026, Caplin announced plans for a privately funded 15,000-seat soccer stadium and mixed-use development near Jacksonville’s St. Johns Town Center that would serve as a permanent home for the club.[6]
