Travel eSIM data service provider From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roamix is a travel telecommunications company that provides eSIM mobile data services for international travelers. Operating as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), Roamix offers prepaid mobile data plans across more than 190 countries and territories, delivered digitally via QR code within seconds of purchase.[1] The company's service is intended to eliminate the cost and inconvenience of traditional international roaming by allowing travelers to install a local data profile on their existing device before departure, without requiring a physical SIM card.[2]

Background

eSIM technology

Roamix's services are built on eSIM (embedded SIM) technology. An eSIM is a form of SIM card embedded permanently into a device as a programmable chip, known as an eUICC (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card), rather than as a removable plastic card. Carrier profiles are provisioned remotely via a process called Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP), governed by the GSMA's SGP.22 technical specification for consumer devices, which the GSMA defines as enabling "the secure downloading of operator profiles onto a permanent chip embedded in a device."[3]

Because an eSIM can host multiple carrier profiles simultaneously, travelers are able to retain their home SIM while loading a separate travel data profile, making eSIMs particularly well-suited to international travel.

Industry context

International roaming has historically been a significant cost burden for travelers. Traditional carriers have charged between US$10–15 per day for roaming day-pass programs, with per-megabyte rates considerably higher in the absence of such add-ons.[4] According to Juniper Research, mobile subscribers spent an average of US$8.57 per gigabyte of data when roaming internationally in 2024, compared to US$5.50 per gigabyte for travel eSIM users, a saving of approximately 35%.[5]

The global travel eSIM market was valued at approximately US$1.46 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach US$3.08 billion by 2032.[6] Juniper Research forecast that the global number of travel eSIM users would grow from 40 million in 2024 to over 215 million by 2028, a 440% increase over five years, with traditional carriers projected to lose more than US$11 billion in roaming revenue to eSIM-based alternatives over the same period.[7]

Services

Data plans

Roamix offers three categories of data plan:[8]

  • Local plans: Single-country plans for travelers visiting one destination.
  • Regional plans: Multi-country plans covering geographic regions including Europe, Asia, the Americas, the Middle East, and Oceania, allowing travelers to cross borders without purchasing separate plans.
  • Global plans: Broad-coverage plans spanning multiple regions in a single purchase.

Service characteristics

Roamix plans provide data-only mobile connectivity; the service does not include traditional voice calls or SMS messaging over the cellular network. However, data speeds on supported networks support voice and video calling via applications such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, and similar VoIP services. Mobile hotspot (tethering) is included as standard across all plans, allowing travelers to share their data connection with other devices.

Device compatibility

Roamix is compatible with most flagship smartphones released from 2018 onward. Supported devices include iPhones from the iPhone XR (2018) and later, Samsung Galaxy devices from the S20 series onward, and Google Pixel devices from the Pixel 3 onward. Compatibility also extends to devices from manufacturers including Huawei, Oppo, Sony, Xiaomi, Motorola, Nokia, and others.[9]

A key requirement is that the device must be network-unlocked; carrier-locked devices cannot use third-party eSIM profiles. iPhones purchased in mainland China do not support eSIM. iPhone 14 and later models sold in the United States are eSIM-only devices with no physical SIM tray.

Competitive landscape

Roamix operates in the travel eSIM market alongside several other providers. Competitors include Airalo, founded in 2019 and reported to have surpassed 20 million users as of 2025 after raising US$220 million in a Series C funding round; Holafly, a Spanish company founded in 2017 that has sold over 15 million eSIMs and offers unlimited data plans; and Nomad, founded in 2020 as part of LotusFlare and covering more than 200 destinations.

Like its competitors, Roamix functions as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), partnering with local mobile network operators (MNOs) in each destination country to provide coverage rather than owning network infrastructure.[10] Travel eSIM providers may operate as Mobile Network Aggregators (MNAs), provisioning eSIM profiles that travelers use in roaming or native configurations via partnerships with a limited set of base operators.[11]
